News from Oxfordshire Liberal DemocratsFri 13th Aug 2010: Academy Decision for Oxford School to be Scrutinised. Liberal Democrat Councillors are leading a call in of the decision to continue with the legal process to turn Oxford School into an academy, with support from Labour and Green Councillors. Call in of Ardley Incinerator Decision. Lib Dem councillors participated in the recent call in of the decision by the County Council's Cabinet to sign the contract with Viridor to build an incinerator at Ardley. The call in, stating that the incinerator was not in the best interests of the people of Oxfordshire was supported by Lib Dems Anne Purse and Zoe Patrick and Labour's John Tanner at the meeting of the Scrutiny Committee on 9th August. Thu 12th Aug 2010: Lib Dems Oppose Switching Off of Speed Cameras . As most people by now know, speed cameras in Oxfordshire were switched off on 1st August. This is because the County Council on 27th July decided to cut its whole £600,000 contribution to the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership (a partnership that includes Buckinghamshire and Berkshire councils, and the police). The Government grant to local authorities towards the funding of the partnership was reduced by £300,000 but the withdrawal of the additional £300,000 as a cost-saving measure means that the partnership is no longer workable in Oxfordshire. Wed 23rd Jun 2010: No "Coalition" at County Hall. The leading Tory group at County Hall will no doubt be expecting Lib Dem support for new in-year budget cuts that they intend to announce next month, but there is no sign of any give and take on their part in return. Tue 15th Jun 2010: Lib Dem Calls to Protect Flora and Fauna Fall on Deaf Ears. Oxfordshire Liberal Democrats are today expressing their disappointment that the Conservative run County Council has ignored suggestions to help Oxfordshire wildlife. Safeguarding and enhancing biodiversity - the amount and variety of wild animals, insects and plants in an area - has been a duty placed on local authorities since 2006, and today the Lib Dems suggested a number of ways in which the County Council could improve its work in this area. However, this was turned down flat by the ruling Conservative group. Public Set Ridiculous Barrier. Lib Dem calls to set thresholds for petitions from members of the public at achievable levels were today turned down by the Conservatives and Labour Councillors at County Hall Fri 30th Apr 2010: Undecided voters swing to Lib Dems following final Leaders Debate. Last night was the final of the three televised Leaders' debates. Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, debated with Gordon Brown and David Cameron about the economy. Subjects discussed included breaking up the banks, creating more jobs and reinvigorating the British economy. Wed 28th Apr 2010: Third and Final Party Leaders' TV debate: The Economy. On Thursday 29th April from 8.30pm, BBC One will host the final live Prime Ministerial Debate of the General Election from the Midlands. Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron will again be going head to head in the run up to the General Election next Thursday. Fri 23rd Apr 2010: Clegg Scores Second Win in Party Leaders Debate. An average of five polls conducted immediately after the Sky TV Leaders Election debate on Thursday night put Nick Clegg as the winner, with all instant polls showing him ahead of Gordon Brown. After the Foreign Affairs-led debate from Bristol dominated by issues like Iraq, immigration and climate change, Nick Clegg won 3 of the 5 polls on the night, building on his position after the first debate. Wed 21st Apr 2010: Second Party Leaders' TV debate: Foreign Affairs. The second Party Leaders Debate is taking place this Thursday starting at 8pm on Sky News. Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron will again be going head to head in a TV debate in the run up to the General Election on May 6th, this time leading on Foreign Affairs. Fri 16th Apr 2010: Nick Clegg Storms First Ever Party Leaders Debate. The polls following the first ever Party Leaders General Election debate on ITV are showing that Nick Clegg has won a convincing victory over David Cameron and Gordon Brown. The debate was the first ever Leaders debate during a UK General Election campaign, and the pollsters are giving it as a big victory for Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats. Thu 15th Apr 2010: First Party Leaders' TV debate: Domestic Affairs. Tonight on ITV, Nick Clegg, Gordon Brown and David Cameron will be going head to head in a TV debate. This is the first of three debates that will be taking place in the run up to the General Election on May 6th. Wed 14th Apr 2010: Fairness - The Liberal Democrat Manifesto Launch. Nick Clegg has launched the Liberal Democrat General Election manifesto. The manifesto sets out four clear priorities of fair taxes, a fair chance for every child, a fair economy, and a fair deal by cleaning up politics. Mon 12th Apr 2010: Apply for a Postal Vote Now: Deadline 20th April. With the General Election on 6th May, there is still time to arrange a postal vote. Voting by post is an easy and convenient way of voting if you are unable to get to the polling station on polling day - for any reason. Tue 6th Apr 2010: Lib Dem Success on Home Care Funding . Liberal Democrats today welcomed the decision of Council to write to the Secretary of State for Health about the funding of the Personal Care at Home Bill. As it is currently written, the Bill would have huge funding implications for local councils, and may well mean cuts in other services to pay for it.
